UN envoy meets Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon Today

UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari met with democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi Sunday in Yangon on Sunday as part of his mission to asses the country's situation in the aftermath of anti-government protests and a brutal crackdown, diplomatic sources said.

Gambari arrived in Yangon on Saturday but was flown to Naypyidaw, the ruling junta's hideaway capital, 350 kilometres north of Rangoon.

He returned to Yangon on Sunday and was immediately granted talks with Aung Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since May, 2003.

Gambai flew to Burma for discussions with the country's entrenched military government on Saturday, seeking to resolve a bloody political uprising which that has generated worldwide demands for the Burmese junta to halt their repression and make way for democratic reforms.

Protest continues at Burmese embassy in Bangkok

About 300 Burmese students, workers and monks staged a protest for the second consecutive day in front of the Burmese embassy in Bangkok on Friday.

The protesters demand that the junta government stop using force against Buddhist monk demonstrators and release the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Protesters wearing red headbands paraded placards and banners condemning the violent suppression of Buddhist monks by the military regime and sang their national anthem.

Myanmar breaks up rallies by beating with iron baton, cuts Internet

Soldiers clubbed and dragged away activists while firing tear gas and warning shots to break up demonstrations Friday before they could grow, and the government cut Internet access, raising fears that a deadly crackdown was set to intensify.
The government said 10 people have been killed since the violence began earlier this week, but diplomats say the toll is likely much higher. Dissident groups have put the number as high as 200, although that number could not be verified.

Government Media said 9 person died in Today Violence in Yangon

Ye Htut, a government spokesman, said riot police clashed with anti-government protesters in Yangon on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring 11. Thirty-one government troops were also injured, he said.

The government said one person was killed Wednesday, although media and dissident reports said up to eight died in the first day of the crackdown.

Among those killed was Kenji Nagai, 50, a journalist covering the protests in Yangon for Japanese video news agency APF News. He was confirmed dead after his father and a company representative identified him in a photo, a Japanese Embassy official in Myanmar told The Associated Press.

Soldiers fired automatic weapons into a crowd of anti-government protesters

Soldiers fired automatic weapons into a crowd of anti-government protesters Thursday as tens of thousands defied the ruling military junta's crackdown with a 10th straight day of demonstrations.
A Japanese Foreign Ministry official told The Associated Press that several people, including a Japanese national, were found dead following Thursday's protests.
Shots were rapidly fired over the protesters, who quickly ran through the eastern edge of downtown Yangon, just blocks from where tens of thousands had earlier braved a government crackdown.

The protesters in that part of the city had repeatedly defied military orders to disperse throughout the day, constantly regrouping after each crackdown, witnesses said.
They also said there was evidence the monks may have been badly beaten during a raid one of the monasteries, with at least 70 of them arrested.

"There's blood in the dormitories and heavy bleeding at the gates. Dormitories were ransacked, a bit of the pagodas which are really sacred were smashed and rubber bullets have been used to destroy walls, doors and Buddhist relics," the source said.

Army continue killing and beating Monks and People in Yangon

Witnesses said at least one man had been shot, though the weapons fire did not appear to be aimed directly at the crowd that had gathered at Sule Pagoda.

The demonstration followed early morning raids on Buddhist monasteries during which soldiers reportedly beat up monks and arrested more than 100.

The monks have spearheaded the largest challenge to the military junta in the isolated Southeast Asian nation since a failed uprising in 1988. In that crisis, soldiers shot into crowds of peaceful demonstrators, killing some 3,000 people.

Violent crackdown launched in Myanmar on 26 September

Burmese security forces fired directly on protesting monks and other demonstrators in Yangon, reportedly killing five monks and one woman in separate Rangoon clashes, according to unconfirmed reports, and witnesses said police beat and dragged away dozens of Buddhist monks.
The government said at least one person was killed, while dissident groups and media reported up to eight dead .The military junta's announcement on state radio and television was the first acknowledgment of the use of force against protesters and its first admission of bloodshed after a month of mostly peaceful demonstrations against the government.

The phone lines of many pro-democracy activists and many members of a volunteer medical team that has followed Rangoon demonstrations also have been cut off by the military government.

Junda Start Firing Gum

Witnesses and monks said some of the deeply revered Buddhist clergy were beaten and manhandled by riot police as they were taken away from the Shwedagon Pagoda, starting point of the past week's monk-led marches against 45 years of military rule.

Witnesses said they heard no gunshots, but they said security forces burnt plastic pipes to fill the area with smoke.

Despite the defiant column heading towards Sule, the number of monks was well below levels on Monday and Tuesday when they stretched five city blocks chanting "democracy, democracy" with no visible security presence.

Junta start using Gums and Batons

The junta had banned all public gatherings of more than five people and imposed a nighttime curfew following eight days of anti-government marches led by monks in Yangon and other areas of the country, including the largest in nearly two decades.

Firing shots into the air, beating their shields with batons and shouting orders to disperse, the police chased some of the monks and about 200 of their supporters, while others tried to stubbornly hold their place near the eastern gate to the vast shrine complex.

Some fell to the ground amid the chaos and at least one monk was seen struck with a baton.

Za Ga Na was arrested at his home in Yangon

Prominent comedian Za Ga Na, who had joined the monks on Monday in urging people to support the protests, was arrested at his home in Yangon along with activist Win Naing, relatives said.

Troops and riot police take up positions outside at six big activist monasteries in Yangon

Troops and riot police took up positions outside at least six big activist monasteries in Yangon on Wednesday as Myanmar's junta tried to prevent monks leading new protest marches against military rule, witnesses said.
Hundreds more waited in a park behind the Sule Pagoda, the city centre focus of the biggest protests against the generals in 20 years, apparently prepared to prevent any repetition.
There was no immediate word from the monks on whether they would risk their first major confrontation with the junta by trying to march again despite fears of a repetition of the bloody end to a 1988 uprising, primarily in the Sule Pagoda area.

Detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was moved to the Insein prison

Detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was moved to the notorious Insein prison from her Rangoon lakeside home at University Avenue, the Reuters news agency reported. Meanwhile Britain's ambassador Mark Canning said in an interview with Reuters that Burma's defense ministry appeared to be leading the government's response to the protests, spearheaded by young Buddhist monks. "They both assured me that it would be dealt with in a "correct" fashion, whatever that means," he said.

Myanmar Military Government imposed 60-Days curfew in Yangon and Mandalay

Army are on the Street of Mandalay since yesterday, Sep 25

Burmese military junta on Tuesday bans gathering of more than five people in a place and declares curfew in two major cities Rangoon and Mandalay, according to a police source in Rangoon.

They also said that the city was now under direct control of Yangon's military commander for 60 days.

Witnesses say 11 military trucks were deployed around the city hall. The government earlier used loud speakers warning people not to take part in the protests.

The campaign began after the military government ended subsidies on fuel, leaving many people unable to afford to take a bus.

Monks' Demonstration Continued in Yangon Today

More than 1000 monks protested against the regime in former capital again.
Several thousands of people were around the monks and encouraging them in the rain with umbrellas.
" The USDA members are walking in front of the monks and leading the crowd, pretending to be followers of the monks and protesters. But they have not beaten anyone yet," an eyewitness told Mizzima.
"The first one [monk] is holding his alms bowl upside down, and after that three monks are holding Sasana flags. The monks are marching 3 or 4 abreast. However there are only two monks in the last rows," he added.

Another eyewitness said, "There are over 1,000 [monks]. There's a lot. People are also along the road with umbrellas. An aunty [middle aged woman] is crying on the roadside. She said the monks have to walk because the people dare not do so."Activists say they have found USDA members in the crowd who were involved in the crackdown against an 88 generation students' demonstration last month.
"We identified some people who beat us up in Shwegondaing. They are walking now in front of the monks as if they are part of the protest and laymen of the monks," an activist said.
The protests are the biggest challenge to the ruling junta since the mass uprising of August 1988.
